Tiles setlement BSF Project

BSF Project

Project and grants between Israel and Hawaii

Overview

As part of the project, we want to experiment with new tiles for coral recruitment, using new technologies such as 3D printers. All tiles are designed and printed by the Israel Institute of Technology. Composed of various components such as CaCO3 (DEFINE), PA12 (DEFINE). Their size will be 1.5cmX1.5cmX0.3cm.

SEM Haplotype characterization POC_ID_relative abundace project

SEM Haplotype characterization | POC_ID

Summary

As part of my PhD project on Settlement and post settlement challenges to successful recruitment for reef building corals the second chapter focused on the relative abundance of Pocillopora sp. within the Moorea lagoon. A characterization study of the calcareous skeleton by Haplotype (Johnston et al 2021) will be carried out. In addition to genetic identification, this study will enable us to understand the plasticity of each Haplotype as a function of its natural environment. It will also highlight the great interspecific diversity of Pocillopora sp. populations. Analysis of the fragments will be carried out at Haifa University using the SEM 3D Imagine technique (Goodbody-Gringley & Waletich, 2018; Doherty, Matthew et al. 2023)

Coral health monitoring

Coral health status protocol.

The health of coral reefs is of paramount importance to millions of people around the world (CITE). Coral reefs provide many ecosystem services, including coastal protection, necessary nutrition, habitat for many animal species, and important economic benefits such as tourism (CITE).

Due to coral bleaching (Hughes et al. 2018), anthropogenic pollution (Bellwood et al. 2004), and ocean acidification (CITE), corals can show signs of poor health and thus lose their natural functions.

Through a health status chart (CITE) set up by the Australia Institute of Marine Biology, we are able to create health status tracking through a color chart.

Microfragmentation protocol Gryphon

The following protocol allows the fragmentation of corals to create microfragments, adapting the size of the fragments desired for experimentation and/or coral restoration. Gryphon can be used on both live and dead corals as needed.

Pocillopora sp. spawning observation

#Coral spawning observation

Context
